What would Mr. Spock say?
When I was a kid in the sixties, I never missed an episode of the original Star Trek. It was unlike anything else on television, and I was a huge fan. When Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) came to Waco all the schools received one ticket to a luncheon that featured Nimoy as speaker. (I didn’t win the raffle for the ticket. I was crushed.) While I enjoyed all the episodes there is one that has stuck with me over the years, especially the closing comment made by Mr. Spock:
“After a time you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.”
(Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock in Amok Time, 1967)
Was Mr. Spock, right? Have you gained the status, financial security, and personal and professional success that you deserve because of your hard work and careful planning – and then found out that it isn’t enough? That something is missing? According to a mythical character in an imaginary world, such a thing can happen.
But a real live Jesus Christ said it first: “For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?” (Mark 8:36). You can have everything you desire, but if you don’t have Christ, you have nothing. Want to know more? Join us in worship and hear the Good News. It may not be as logical as Mr. Spock would like, but it’s still the best message around! aaahhhh…….
